Iglesia del Convento de Santo Domingo
The first convent was built in 1540, and the current one was constructed in 1716.Â
It occupies the northern part of Santo Domingo Square. Its church has a cruciform floor plan with eight vaults and a dome over the central nave. The entrance is presided over by a high relief image of Santo Domingo. On each side, there are three Corinthian columns with images of saints.Â
The entrance features round arches with a relief of Saint John the Baptist at the top and phytomorphic ornamentation in the spandrels. It has three-compartment columns with composite capitals and a high relief of Santo Domingo de Guzmán in the center, framed with moldings and diamonds, a fluted frieze, and a movable cornice.Â
Inside, a Latin cross plan with lateral chapels can be observed. The vault is a barrel vault with lunettes, and there is an octagonal dome with a drum and stained glass windows at the crossing. The main altar retablo is Neoclassical, the work of Manuel Tolsá, and was built in the late 18th century.Â
The temple consists of 11 chapels distributed on both sides, including the Sacred Heart, Our Lady of Light, Saint Joseph, Virgin of Guadalupe, Saint Martin de Porres, the Nazarene, Saint Catherine of Siena, the Virgin of the Rosary, the Divine Providence, the Virgin of Sorrows, and Saint Peter Martyr of Verona. The choir has an 18th-century pipe organ.
It is located in front of Santo Domingo Square, which, in addition to being surrounded by marvelous buildings, offers a unique atmosphere that transports you to the colonial era. It is said that the house of the last Mexica tlatoani, Cuauhtémoc, was located precisely here.
