Gran Museo del Mundo Maya
In this world-class museum the multimedia experience complements the Museum's permanent exhibit.
This is a very didactic way to reveal the mysteries of the ancient and enigmatic Maya culture, as well as the evolution of the Yucatan Peninsula.
It has several permanent exhibition halls:
Hall 1: El Mayab Nature and Culture
Here, it discusses the Maya people who have inhabited the Yucatan Peninsula, as well as those who settled in Belize, Guatemala, and parts of Honduras. It showcases the impact the Maya have had on the region after populating the area for over 3000 uninterrupted years.
Hall 2: Mayans Today
This hall offers an exhibition aimed at showcasing the different groups of Maya, displaying their ancestral cultures, rituals, and recreations of ceremonies, even including the Christian influence of recent centuries.
Hall 3: Mayans of the Past
The exhibition shows the impact of the conquest on Maya culture, discussing the devastation of Maya cities and the countless vestiges that were destroyed, yet how many of the Maya traditions and knowledge were preserved despite this.
Hall 4: Ancestral Maya
Offers a glimpse into the incredible culture that thrived independently and developed in a challenging environment like the tropical jungle and swamps, contributing knowledge in art, architecture, astronomy, and more.
Chicxulub Aerolite Hall
It tells the story of the five major extinctions that have occurred throughout history, where over 90% of the planet's species disappeared. The last one, during the Mesozoic era 65 million years ago, was due to the impact of an asteroid precisely in the Yucatan Peninsula, giving the region special characteristics.
Other Halls
These spaces are dedicated to temporary exhibitions, including a hall with a large Mayamax screen where films, documentaries, and short films are projected.
It features an impressive light and sound show that narrates the origins of life and journeys through modern times, projected on the museum's exterior walls.
The museum offers guided tours, a restaurant-bar, and a gift shop.
