Ex Convento de Santo Domingo de Oaxtepec
This cultural heritage site was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1994.
The first Dominican convent in New Spain built in an indigenous town dating back to around 1535. It stands about eight meters above the town's level.
It was constructed on what had been a pre-Hispanic lordship since the nearby springs were used by the Mexicas as a spa with botanical gardens.
Its sober façade contrasts with its interior, where a roof with Gothic ribs stands out.
The cloister has corridors and a spacious patio, featuring well-preserved beautiful mural paintings.
Here, you can find the remains of two Baroque altarpieces and a small botanical museum.
If you have time, don't miss out on enjoying the spas in Oaxtepec.
