Catedral y Ex Convento de la Asunción de Cuernavaca

This cultural heritage site was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1994.

The Cuernavaca Cathedral and Former Convent of the Assumption was constructed around 1526, this building was commissioned by the Franciscans and was elevated to Cathedral in 1891 when the Diocese of Cuernavaca was established. It is one of the oldest cathedrals in the country.

This monumental complex includes not only the temple that now functions as the Cathedral but also its adjacent convent, which houses the bishop's rooms and offices, as well as the Pinacoteca, the Open Chapel of San José, the atrium with various funerary monuments, fountains, the atrial cross, and the location of the former chapels. Currently, the chapels of Dolores, Tercera Orden, and El Carmen are situated there. The former orchard, which was located to the south, is now the Parque Revolución.

For its construction, the Franciscan friars chose the four highest hills in the city and leveled the terrain with sandstone from the ravine known as Amanalco.

Its enormous cloister has semi-circular arches on the ground floor, a characteristic it shares with the Cortes Palace. Here, some frescoes depicting chapters of the life of Saint Francis of Assisi can be appreciated.

The Assumption Church has a single nave with a continuous barrel vault and a Latin cross plan. During its renovation, frescoes recalling the life of Saint Philip of Jesus were discovered.

Its tower, which was started in the 17th century, has undergone several modifications and reconstructions without losing its beautiful proportions.

The Open Chapel of San José, built before the church, may be the oldest on the continent. It has large arches and some buttresses that were added in later periods.

The former chapels were replaced by the following chapels:

The Third Order Chapel of San Francisco

It is a magnificent example of popular Baroque. Its façade blends typically Spanish elements with indigenous characters crowned with feathers. The side entrance features a seashell as a distinctive embellishment. Inside, a wonderful altarpiece stands out, showcasing the richness of Churrigueresque style.

The Dolores Chapel

It is a simple construction probably dating back to the 17th century, with a doorway framed by a semi-circular arch, plain walls, and a single nave.

The Carmen Chapel

It is a late 19th-century or early 20th-century construction, built in a Neo-Gothic style.

Atrium

In the atrium, there are also various funerary monuments, and in the upper cloister of the convent, you can visit the Cathedral's Pinacoteca.
