Previously, the site occupied by the temple was the city's main cemetery.
In the mid-17th century, Father Lorenzo de Olivera allocated the land for the construction of the temple, which was consecrated in 1689.
The facade is made of green quarry stone and features two towers with small bell towers. It is adorned with four vertically aligned niches, all framed by pilasters with Tuscan capitals.
The interior has a single nave with a continuous barrel vault, and in the presbytery, there is an image of the Crucified Christ, guarded by angels, with the Sorrowful Virgin at the foot of the cross. The walls display several sculptures and two paintings. Notable are a pair of ancient oil paintings representing the Holy Trinity in the baptistery and another in the sacristy.
