Historic Synagogue Justo Sierra
This synagogue dates back to the 1920s.
It was during that time when Ashkenazi Jews arrived in the Historic Center, and the building is a replica of the Shavel Synagogue (Siauliai), Lithuania, which is where the person who financed its construction came from, although it also has elements from synagogues in Jewish villages in Poland and Russia. However, its facade was designed to be in harmony with the colonial surroundings of the area.
Its elaborate and larger bimah stands out as the most elaborate in Mexico, featuring fine woodworking combined with painted glass. The synagogue's ceiling is painted with vibrant colors, and there is a mural depicting the Garden of Eden.
Visiting the synagogue is like stepping into a corner of Eastern Europe, and you will be amazed by its history, details, symbols, and architecture. Additionally, you can learn about the stories of the early immigrants.
