Museo y Centro de Documentación, Ex Convento de la Natividad en Tepoztlán

This cultural heritage site was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1994.

In Tepoztlán, a beautiful Magic Town, you will find the Convent of Our Lady of the Nativity, which was built by the Tepozteco indigenous people under the direction of the Dominicans between 1555 and 1580.

It was dedicated to the Nativity, and its decorations feature marvelous details with plant elements and fantastic creatures. Its original bells and paintings from five centuries ago are still preserved.

The convent exhibits a Renaissance-style architecture, and unlike other monastic complexes, it is located north of the church.

When you enter the complex, you can take a journey through time as you explore its cloister, central courtyard, and corridors.

You can admire the delicate decoration of its interior walls and vaults, which depict flowers, geometric figures, and emblems of the Dominican order, among other decorative elements.

It has a large atrium that served as a cemetery during the colonial era. Its entrance is adorned with a mural made of seeds, created by the local community each year to enhance the beauty of the complex.

The façade of the church is beautifully decorated with angels and cherubs.

On the upper floor of the convent is the Museum and Historical Documentation Center of Tepoztlán, where you can see archaeological and ethnographic pieces.

It features five exhibition rooms where you can learn more about the history and culture of the peoples who have inhabited this area, through various objects related to daily life, festivities, dances, gastronomy, and handicraft production.

There is also a library and a photo library with images dating back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The museum offers guided tours, a shop, a bookstore, and a documentation center.

The viewpoint offers a majestic view of the Tepoztlán Sierra.

Don't miss the opportunity to climb Cerro del Tepozteco to enjoy an exceptional panoramic view and an incredible pyramid.
