Museo de Arqueología Subacuática, Baluarte de San José el Alto
Baluarte de San José el Alto
This building with a square plan is a clear example of 18th-century military constructions.
It is located on a natural elevation north of the city, formerly known as Cerro de la Vigía Vieja and now called Cerro de Bellavista.
Its strategic position supported the batteries of San Matías and San Lucas, which were located on the coast. It offers magnificent views of the city and the sea from its terraces and squares.
Museo de Arqueología Subacuática (Underwater Archaeology Museum)
In the former rooms of the soldiers and lookouts, there is now an interesting exhibition distributed in six rooms.
These objects have the particularity of having been found submerged in the waters of rivers, lakes, lagoons, streams, cenotes, and flooded caves within the Yucatán Peninsula.
Among the notable objects are a model of the walled enclosure, paintings of famous pirates who raided several coastal towns, white and firearms dating from the 15th to the 18th centuries, as well as some weapons from the 16th to the 19th centuries.
Other pieces that attract attention are replicas of boats that sailed the coastal waters of Campeche, and common objects such as keys, bottles, locks, and spurs.
