Museo de las Culturas de Oaxaca
The Museum of Cultures is located in the beautiful Former Convent of Santo Domingo, one of the jewels of Viceregal Baroque architecture founded by the Dominicans.
Construction began in 1575 and was completed in 1731.
It is the most important museum in the state and provides an archaeological, historical, and ethnographic overview of the Oaxacan cultures.
The museum has 14 exhibition halls that cover 10,000 years of Oaxaca's history, from the first nomadic groups to arrive in the region, through the flourishing of important pre-Hispanic cultures, the conquest, the emergence of a new nation, and the current life of indigenous communities.
It exhibits archaeological pieces from the Mixtec and Zapotec cultures, as well as the treasure of Tomb No. 7 from Monte Alban, consisting of beautiful pieces made of gold, silver, jade, turquoise, and obsidian, along with other important pieces from Mitla, Yagul, Lambityeco, Huijazoo, and Dainzú, to name a few of the most important archaeological sites of the Zapotec and Mixtec cultures.
It also features significant colonial pieces and an interesting ethnological display of the 15 indigenous groups in this region.
In what used to be the Dominican cells, "interactive rooms" have been installed, where visitors can learn more about the various artisanal crafts of the state with the support of multimedia technology.
It has multipurpose areas and auditoriums where concerts and conferences take place. It also offers guided tours and an attractive gift shop.
