Museo de la Máscara, Templo y Ex-Convento del Carmen
Monumental Baroque-style building whose construction began in 1593.
This construction continued through the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries when its domes were built.
The complex is formed by the temple and the Former Convent, which have a unique architectural style characterized by sobriety.
Due to its large size, it has had various uses throughout history, serving as a prison, parking lot, commercial warehouses, and bus terminal, among others.
The temple stands on a Latin cross, and its domes built in the 17th century stand out.
Between 1974 and 1979, the old convent was restored and adapted as the House of Culture of Morelia, also housing the offices of the Michoacan Institute of Culture.
The cloister is on a single floor, and what used to be the friars' cells now host workshops and courses.
The refectory stands out, where some frescoes dating back to the 18th century can still be appreciated.
The extensive building also houses a library in what used to be the vestry and the Museum of Masks.
The museum occupies the main building of the Carmen convent complex.
The museum exhibits 167 ethnographic objects from nearly 20 states of the Republic. There are masks made of different types of wood, paper, leather, and other materials. Many of them are part of dance attire.
