Museo de Arte Religioso, Ex Convento de Santa Mónica

This building dates back to the 17th century.

It is the most complete vestige of convent architecture for nuns in Puebla. The building underwent renovations during the 18th, 19th, and early 20th centuries.

Its facades and courtyards present a baroque style with characteristic Talavera tiles. However, its main facade is neoclassical.

This place has the history of creating the typical dish of Puebla, chiles en nogada, as it is said that the nuns of the convent were tasked with creating a dish in honor of the Insurgent Army, using the red of pomegranate seeds, the white of walnut sauce, and the green of parsley leaves.

The Profesas Patio stands out, covered with Talavera and petatillo tiles. Adjacent to it is the Temple of Santa Mónica, which houses the Señor de las Maravillas, a highly venerated image in Puebla.

It is the first museum in Mexico dedicated to the religious life of women. Through 23 rooms, it narrates the life of the enclosed nuns. In the museum, you can learn more about the daily life of the Augustinian nuns, from the kitchen to the refectory and their daily tasks.

The Religious Art Museum showcases works by important artists from the viceregal period, such as Pascual Pérez, Juan de Villalobos, Juan Correo, Miguel Cabrera, and Miguel Jerónimo de Zendejas, to name a few.
