Casamata Museum

This is a historic building.

It is the only survivor of the 10 fortifications that formed the walls and trenches of the defense system of the city of Matamoros.

This building was converted into a museum in 1970 and displays objects from the pre-Hispanic era, the colonial period, Independence, and the Revolution.

One of the most peculiar objects exhibited in the museum is a unique iron coffin that once contained the remains of General Servando Canales, Governor of Tamaulipas between 1866 and 1870, who fought during the American and French invasions.

Another rarity of the museum is that at the back of the construction, you can see the entrance to some dark tunnels that hold a series of stories and legends that can frighten even the bravest.

It has 5 permanent rooms, one temporary room, and a newspaper library.
