Biblioteca de México (Library of Mexico)
The building that houses the Library, "La Ciudadela," was constructed in the 18th century.
Over the years, the building has served various purposes, including a tobacco factory and a prison during the independence movement. In fact, José María Morelos was detained here.
The building is of sober neoclassical style and resembles a fortress. It was declared a historical monument in 1931.
Today, it has become a cultural center that houses more than 220,000 volumes, including books, magazines, and newspapers.
There are dedicated spaces for collections of famous writers such as Carlos Monsiváis and Alí Chumacero. Additionally, there is a Children's Room and a room for people with visual disabilities, as well as a newspaper library and a reserved collection.
When you visit the library, don't miss the area called "Jardín de los Aromas," where you can have a sensory experience with the different plant species and flowers planted in this pleasant place.
