Construction began in 1904.

The Former School of Economics features a Neorenaissance design with Art Nouveau elements, originally intended to be the residence of Rafael Ortiz de la Huerta, the founder of Banco Mercantil de México.

In 1938, it was rented by UNAM to become the School of Economics and currently serves as the Center for Foreign Language Education.
