Colegio de las Vizcaínas
It is housed in the College of San Ignacio de Loyola.
This is a beautiful 18th-century building that has been an educational institution since its inception. In fact, it is the only institution that has continuously operated in Mexico since colonial times.
The museum's important collection comes from various sources, such as the Brotherhood of Our Lady of Aránzazu and the female colleges of San Miguel de Belén and Our Lady of Charity.
Inside the museum, there is a chapel with five magnificent original altarpieces dedicated to San Ignacio, the Virgin of Aránzazu, the Virgin of Sorrows, the Virgin of Loreto, and the Virgin of Guadalupe.
The Viceregal painting collection includes works by renowned Viceregal authors such as Miguel Cabrera, José de Ibarra, Cristóbal de Villalpando, and Juan Correa, as well as distinguished 19th-century painting masters like Santiago Rebull.
Regarding its sculptural collection, it features sacred figures carved in wood with extraordinary gilded woodwork, as well as pieces made of cane and ivory.
The textile collection comprises over 1,200 works, including samplers, silk embroideries, lacework, threads, and gold and silver metal sheets, as well as natural pearls.
The scientific collection displays samples, laboratory instruments, and various scientific experimentation devices dating from the 19th and 20th centuries.
Additionally, the museum safeguards an important collection of silverware, domestic furniture, as well as didactic materials from different eras.
Guided tours are available on the last Friday of each month at 12:00 pm, and capacity is limited.
