MISSION THAT WAS THE STARTING POINT FOR EVANGELIZING TEXAS

Guerrero is located in the northeastern part of the state of Coahuila, 20 minutes away from Piedras Negras and close to the border with the United States.

This town has preserved its history and mission past, so you will not only find beautiful remnants of that era but also learn about some of its legends.

This village is renowned for having the best specimens of white-tailed deer in the region.

If you visit this town in July, during the celebration of the International Watermelon Fair, you can witness the spectacle of hot air balloons at the San Bernardo Mission, along with other activities that include a gastronomic and artisanal exhibition, amusement rides, and plenty of free watermelons.

Its climate is typical of the desert, with low temperatures in the winter months, especially at night, and temperatures rising above 30°C during the summer.

It is located 48 km (40 minutes) from Piedras Negras and 131 km (an hour and a half) from Nuevo Laredo.

Tourist Attractions in Guerrero

Main Square of Guerrero

It has lush trees that provide comfortable shade and a characteristic kiosk with twelve arches. In front of the square, there is a small temple that houses some interesting 18th-century paintings.

Walking through the blocks surrounding the Main Square takes you deeper into the town's history. With old and intriguing buildings, you can learn more about its past.

Iglesia de San Juan Bautista (Church)

Located one block from the Main Square, it was built in 1800. Inside, one of its rooms holds images dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries, as well as a beautiful baptismal font from the 18th century.

Ancient Missions

If you want to learn more about the evangelization process, you can visit the ruins of several missions, such as the San Juan Bautista Mission, which was the first Franciscan mission, the San Francisco Solano Mission dating back to 1700, and the San Bernardo Mission built in 1702, which became a key point during the colonization of Texas. From the latter, you can still admire the church ruins.

All these buildings, including the Presidio de San Juan Bautista, are partially preserved, but it is interesting to visit them because they still retain the air that characterized the missions. Although in ruins, these remnants combined with the landscape make it one of the most photogenic places in this Magical Town.

The San Bernardo Mission is a typical Franciscan mission with a Latin cross plan oriented towards the sunrise. Currently, it has no roof, and the only thing that has been preserved is the vault of the side chapel.

Casa de la Cultura (House of Culture)

Guerrero also offers a House of Culture where regional culture and arts are promoted. It is open for any artist who wishes to exhibit their work and offers various workshops in music, painting, and theater. In addition to the exhibition hall, it has an auditorium and a theater.

Vineyard

Just like in some other regions of the state, a vineyard has been established near Guerrero, only 8 km from Río Bravo. It had its first harvest in 2011 but has managed to produce excellent quality wines under the label Don Baldomero.

Cemeteries

In this Magical Town, there are three cemeteries: Guadalupe Cemetery, San José Congregation Cemetery, and Guerrero Cemetery. By exploring them, you can learn more about the architectural styles of the 18th and 19th centuries.
