The train station was inaugurated in 1911.
The plaza has a Californian colonial style and featured platforms and a pleasant garden.
This space has been transformed into the Plaza de las Tres Centurias, named so because the buildings that make it up were constructed in three different centuries: 19th, 20th, and 21st.
The Plaza offers several attractions, including:
- The Old Freight Warehouse, which houses the Railway Museum
- A children's train with its own station called "Peñuelas"
- The beautiful steam locomotive "La Hidrocálida"
- La Plazuela de los Manantiales, evoking the 16 springs that led to the city's foundation
- La Plazuela del Silbato, with a monumental clock built in honor of the former Round House located in the old railroad workshops
- La Plazuela Cívica, with a monumental flag. The flagpole measures 60 meters in height, and the flag is one of the largest in the country.
- Jardín de la Estación, housing the Dancing Waters Fountain, a light and sound show with advanced technology that operates at the 15th minute of every hour.
- The Caboose of Knowledge, a space designed for children to immerse themselves in the railroad environment.
- The Teatro Furgón, a freight car adapted to present entertaining shows.
