It is a geological fault formed more than 30 million years ago. It was formed around the same time as the Grand Canyon.

It is one of the top places to visit in Mexico for nature lovers and adventure-seeking travelers.

The canyon is 200 meters (655 feet) wide and 13 kilometers (8 miles) long. There are several ways to enjoy Sumidero Canyon: on foot, by boat or from above (by car).

A boat trip to this deep natural canyon will reward you with majestic views thanks to its towering steep walls that soar up to 0.6 miles (1 km) high, its caves beautiful waterfalls, and a wide variety of animals such as: crocodiles, spider monkeys pumas, jaguars, vultures and more than 150 species of birds.

In Canyon Sumidero, there are several seasonal waterfalls, that means you can only see them during the rainy season. The most famous one is Árbol de Navidad (Christmas tree). Real magic happens in summer, when the water flowing down the walls causes the softer layers of the rock to fall, it really looks like a Christmas tree.

Other attractions is the Cave of Colors, it is famous because it is pink. The unusual color is caused by minerals, mainly magnesium and potassium. The cave serves as a chapel and includes the image of the Virgin of Guadalupe. There is a ladder, so you can climb into the cave right from your boat.

The boats will take you through Canyon Sumidero to Chicoasén Dam and back. A pretty large dam with 52,600 square kilometers (20,309 square miles) and a height of 261 meters (856 feet), the tallest dam in North America and the 10th tallest dam in the world.

Hiking enthusiasts won’t be disappointed. Several travel agencies and guides are offering the unique experience to explore the canyon. You can walk alongside the riverbank and enjoy waterfalls, incredibly clean natural pools, and wildlife in the jungle. There are half-day and full-day variants, be sure to hire a certified guide.

If you want to see Sumidero Canyon from above, you can go by car. You will have to find the road called Miradores del Cañón del Sumidero (The Views of Sumidero Canyon) and it will lead you to four main views: Mirador La Ceiba from here you will see the beginning of the Canyon, Mirador La Coyota from here you can appreciate the walls and river, Mirador el Roblar from here you will see the canyon from a slightly higher point, and Mirador el Tepehuaje a beautiful watchtower with a large parking lot.
