It was a Totonac settlement.
The site was founded 1,800 years ago, around 200 A.D. in the region of Cuetzalan, and was occupied until 800 A.D.
This importat ceremonial center was contemporary to El Tajin, and shares an architectural style with this famous site, in particular the incorporation of rows of blank window-like niches along the terraces of pyramids.
Must see Buildings
The site has extensive plazas - notably a square one - on top of natural platforms. The group is oriented to the north and the most elongated part of the main plaza is from east to west; Temples, a ball court and administrative buildings were gathered around the central plaza, while residential buildings were placed outside.
Two of these buildings have been explored; one faces east and the other north. The latter is known as the “Templo de la Greca”.
The ball game is 100 meters long and is one of the largest in Mesoamerica.
The extraordinary acoustics of the Main Square allow you to hear perfectly the sounds emitted from the Lookout or the Plaza del Campanario (Bell Tower Plaza). This was important because the plaza was the meeting point of the community. In addition, the buildings surrounding the Main Square are perfectly aligned with the four cardinal points.
On the days when the wind is very strong, a very special sound is produced by the whistle of the air that occurs when passing through the niches.
