A CHARMING TOWN SURROUNDED BY NATURAL WONDERS

Ocozocoautla de Espinosa is a hidden gem nestled among the mountains of Chiapas, offering a unique blend of history, irresistible flavors, colorful festivities, natural beauty, and warm hospitality.

Its name, derived from the Nahuatl language, means “forest of the ocozotes.”

With its pleasant climate and landscapes that include rivers, the incomparable Sima de las Cotorras, and stunning waterfalls, it is a favorite destination for nature lovers, including those who seek extreme thrills.

Ocozocoautla is renowned for the Zoque Coiteco Carnival, a festival that turns the streets into a vibrant scene filled with joy, music, and color. Participants dance to regional music, wearing traditional costumes and masks. Visitors are always welcome to join in the festivities, which take place the week before Easter.

This picturesque town is located in the central region of Chiapas, just 45 minutes from Tuxtla Gutiérrez.

Iglesia de San Juan Bautista (Church)

Dating back to the 16th century, it is one of the oldest churches in the state, maintaining its original architecture with a façade influenced by Mudejar style. 

Iglesia de San Bernabé 

A simple adobe chapel from the 19th century, it is listed in the INAH catalog of historical monuments.

Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Sagrado Corazón 

Also known as the Barrio Nuevo Church, it dates back to the 17th century and is included in the INAH catalog of historical monuments.

Zoque Regional Museum 

This museum displays fossil samples of dinosaurs from 250 million years ago and illustrates the lifestyle of the early Zoque inhabitants. It also features exhibits by local artists and a virtual room showcasing the traditional carnival of the region.  en que vivían los primeros pobladores de la cultura zoque. Hay también exposiciones de artistas locales y una sala virtual mostrando el tradicional carnaval de la región.

Biblioavión

A cultural and tourist space in Zoque Park, housed in a real airplane modified for various cultural activities. It includes a virtual reality area and a computer section.

Cerro Ombligo

A small archaeological site of Zoque origin near Barrio San Miguel, accessible via a narrow rustic path.

Mirador de la Cruz 

Located on the hill north of town, a cross stands at the summit offering a beautiful panoramic view of the city.

Cañón Río de la Venta

The La Venta River Canyon winds through the El Ocote Biosphere Reserve for 80 kilometers, with towering rock walls up to 400 meters high. Hidden within these walls are caves that housed Zoque burial sites and offerings. You can explore the canyon by boat and enjoy its diverse landscapes.

Cascada El Aguacero

The spectacular landscape features water cascading from a cave down multiple levels of rock covered in vegetation. Highlights include El Encanto, an underground river, and a waterfall named “Don Nicho.”

There are two viewpoints, La Tortuga and El Zopilote, as well as a restaurant and rest area.

Sima de las Cotorras

A natural phenomenon where flocks of parrots descend and ascend in a spiral, creating an impressive spectacle.

It is a 160-meter-diameter, 140-meter-deep sinkhole, appearing as a black hole surrounded by green trees. Its walls are adorned with cave paintings and covered with chicozapote, mahogany, jobo, fig trees, and orchids. It is home to many birds, including hundreds of parrots that rise in a spiral at dawn and return before sunset.
