Fishing in Mahahual and Xcalak
Sport fishing excursions can be arranged from Mahahual and Xcalak.
In the summer months you can catch dorado, sailfish and marlin. In the rest of the year it is easy to catch red snapper, mackerel, barracuda and tuna.
Xcalak has been preserved as a virgin place and has several hectares of flats or low waters, as well as lagoons and reefs that are ideal places for fishing. In fact, this destination is considered one of the best in the world for fly fishing. Tarpon and snook can be easily caught.
One of the novelties is underwater fishing, where the fisherman submerges with snorkel equipment and by using a harpoon hunts down his prey. Mahahual is one of the best places in the world to practice this exciting sport due to its transparent waters and its rich biodiversity, where you can find yellowfin tuna, wahoo, mahi-mahi, snapper, roosterfish, striped marlin and grouper, among others.
It is important to mention that in Mexico spearfishing is only allowed with the technique of free diving and it is illegal to practice it with the use of diving equipment. Also, the caught fish are eaten or donated.

In Chinchorro, lobster is caught by hand harvested by the locals.
Sport Fishing in Chetumal
Fishing tours can be hired from Chetumal Bay. This is an area with a rich marine life.
The place is famous for the so-called Marlín de la Bahía (Bay Marlin) because you can catch specimens that can measure up to 2 m (7 ft).
You can also catch horse mackerel, barracudas and sea bass.
