It has an area of 1598.26 ha. The caves are the largest in the world and the most visited in the country.Â
Its spectacular limestone rock formations of marine origin were formed 85 million years ago and it is believed that they were sculpted by the current of the San Jerónimo River that runs below the cave at a depth of 95 m.Â
Its name is Nahuatl and means "fertile place for the cultivation of peanuts." In pre-Hispanic times, the Chontales performed ceremonies and rites for their gods inside the caves.
Here the Amacuzac river is born surrounded by low jungle. This river is the habitat of freshwater otters.Â
The visitor can travel approximately 4 km and it is divided into 19 natural rooms of impressive beauty with a large number of whimsical formations where your imagination allows you to see animals or other objects, such as: Pórtico (Entrance), Los Borregos (The Sheep), El beso o de los enamorados (The kiss or of the lovers), La Aurora (The Dawn), La trompa de elefante (The elephant trunk), El Negrito (The black boy), Las cortinas (The Curtains), Los Tronos (The Thrones) and Los Querubines (The Cherubs), among many others., dos de entrada y dos de salida, y esta dividida en 19 salones naturales de impresionante belleza con una gran cantidad de caprichosas formaciones en donde tu imaginación te permite ver animales u otros objetos, como: Pórtico, Los borregos, El beso o de los enamorados, La aurora, La trompa de elefante, El negrito, Las cortinas, Los tronos y Los querubines, entro otros muchos otros.
Approximately 500 meters from the entrance there is a large vault at the bottom of which is a beautiful pool of crystalline water. It has guided tours.Â
The caves have served as a venue for musical concerts for importat performers such as Andrea Bocelli, Armando Manzanero and the Acapulco Philharmonic Orchestra. And have served as a film set for films such as: Macario, Tarzan and the Mermaids and Adventure to the Center of the Earth, among others.
If you like adventure you can try the challenges of Dos Bocas where two underground rivers emerge, the Chontacuatlán and the San Jerónimo. Here you can sail on both rivers. It is advisable to go from February to April and not during the rainy season.
At the exit of the caves there are pools of refreshing and crystal clear water where you can swim. There are also various stalls where you can savor delicious snacks.

Location
Located in the north of the State of Guerrero in the municipality of Pilcaya at 25.6 km, approximately 40 minutes, from Taxco.
Hours
The caves are open daily from 10:00 to 17:00 hrs and access to groups is allowed every hour.
