In this area of the country there are a large number of birds due to the warm climate and the deciduous forest. Among the most common species are a large number of hummingbirds, ducks, flag jaro, chachalaca, tufted magpie, vultures, aura, crow, owl, quail, magpies, tijolos, zacateros, turtle doves, sparrows, swallows, guillotas, Montezuma quail, gallinita del monte, acorn pigeon, goldfinch, among others.

Some of the best areas for bird watching are found in Lake Tequesquitengo, Lagunas de Zempoala National Park, Coatetelco, Yautepec, Chamilpa and Jonacatepec.
