The dunes are considered one of Mexico's best-kept secrets.

They are impressive white and very fine silica sand dunes, which increase and decrease their volumes at the whim and will of the wind.

When the wind blows, the dunes move and create magical crystal curtains that cause a unique visual effect. Without scrub vegetation the dunes form extensive mobile sand sheets.

You can hop on a jeep or an ATV and cross through the desert at high speed, or you can slide down the sand dunes on top of a board, all are incredible and unforgettable experiences.

The dunes were used as a setting for several films, including Conan the Destroyer, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, and David Lynch's Dune.

You can also explore the petroglyphs, or rock carvings, found in Samalayuca, the legacy of the early inhabitants of the area. The images date back 1,500 years and depict wild animals including horned sheep, stars and people.

The best time to visit the Médanos de Samalayuca is during the autumn months, since it is not as hot and there is not as much danger of sandstorms as in winter.
