It was previously known as Laguna Scammon and is part of the El Vizcaíno Biosphere Reserve, named a World Heritage Site.
It is an aqueous saline body of water 48 km long and 9 km wide and with a depth ranging from 5 to 12 m, but it has channels more than 20 m deep near the mouth. The lagoon does not receive any contribution of fresh water, since there are no rivers that flow into it, so it is hyperhyaline, that is, saltier than the sea and it is surrounded by coastal dunes that have a height ranging from 12 to 15 m height.
It is one of the important points for the reproduction and hibernation of the gray whale and is the habitat of the seal, dolphin, sea lion, elephant seal and blue whale. In addition, four different species of sea turtles come to the lagoon for reproduction and it is a refuge for a large number of waterfowl during the winter.
In fact, it is considered the most attractive destination for whale watching in Mexico, having two main points: the mouth of the lagoon and the other in the interior part of the lagoon. On the coast there is a rectangular evaporation pond for salt collection and a commercial salt plant.
To enjoy the tour you start at the marina and take a boat with about 8 to 10 passengers. Captains will depart the dock and cruise for 10-15 minutes out into the lagoon. And not very far you will start to see puffs of mist from the whales’ blowholes. Further out you can see whales breaching if you’re lucky.
