The depth, coral density and beautiful formations are some of the characteristics of the coral reef that is located just 350-meter (1,148 feet) from the coast and runs for more than 70 kilometers along the south of Quintana Roo.
DIVING CONDITIONS IN COSTA MAYA :
Visibility varies depending on weather conditions, but is generally between 18 and 30-meter (60 to 100 ft) and the best season is summer when the winds are mild.
The average water temperature in winter is 24ºC, while in summer is 29.5ºC.
DIVING IN MAHAHUAL
The Mahahual reef is one of the wonders of the Caribbean and one of the best places in the Mexican Caribbean for diving. In this area of the Great Mayan Reef, there is an enormous biodiversity, you can find: turtles, eagle rays, eels, lobsters and of course a large number of tropical fish.
It is also an excellent option for snorkeling, because it is a protected area.
In the vicinity of Mahahual there are more than 20 immersion points less than thirty minutes away. Among these are:
Exposición: 9-15 m (30-50 ft), wide variety of marine life, beginners.
Los Escalones: 15-30 m (50-100 ft), a place visited by rays and turtles, intermediate difficulty.
Faro Viejo: 10-23 m (33-75 ft), with currents ranging from gentle to moderate, intermediate difficulty.
Capitanía: 14-60 m (46-196 ft) with a wall and a completely vertical chimney, intermediate difficulty.
Diving in Costa Maya
Río Bermejo: Offers two sites, Laberinto and Cañada, both average 20 m (65 ft) deep, intermediate difficulty.
Jardines: 7-30 m (23-100 ft), colorful coral reefs with tunnels and arches, intermediate difficulty.
Puerto Ángel: 12-26 m (40-85 ft), perfect mix of coral gardens, sandy areas and fascinating ledges, frequented for lionfish hunting, intermediate difficulty.
Punta Herradura: 22-65 m (72-210 ft), great visibility and lots of giant barrel sponges, beginners.
Chinchorrito: Sandbanks dotted with mounds of reef, intermediate difficulty.
Dos Ojos: 15-17 m (30-55 ft), beautiful passages between the reefs, beginners.
Punta Tan: Deep cracks where you can see nurse sharks and rays, intermediate difficulty.
From Mahahual you can access the Xcalak Reef National Park, a marine reserve that offers a landscape with caves and caverns with narrow passages and long chimneys; here there are plenty of elkhorn corals, schools of tarpon that can measure up to two meters and some nurse sharks; however, it is not uncommon to find some dolphins and manatees can be seen sporadically.
TOP DIVE SITES IN XCALAK :
La Poza11-22 m (36-72 ft), a wide channel with high walls with a colony of huge tarpon, intermediate difficulty.
La Chimenea, 20-27 m (65-88 ft), with advanced caves and crevices running through the reef.
La Pozeta, 10-15 m (33-50 ft), with sandy bottoms and cracks where lobsters and moray eels are seen, beginners.
DIVING IN BANCO CHINCHORRO
One of the most attractive places in the area is Banco Chinchorro, a coral atoll that offers the adventure of exploring 68 shipwrecks, like: Coral Negro, with abundant marine life; Ginger Soul, a 19th century freighter; Calderas, a 19th century merchant; 40 Cañones, a 17th century ship with large bronze cannons; The Aquarium, a shallow reef with sand, where you can see manatees and nurse sharks and Santa Teresita, a beautiful coral wall.
It has three small keys with sizes that vary from less than one kilometer to five kilometers; the water inside the barrier reef has a depth ranging from 3 to 5 m (10-16 ft), while the dive sites that are close to the barrier have a depth of 10 to 30 m (33-100 ft).
It is also a unique place for snorkeling.
DIVING IN BACALAR LAGOON :
Another option is to dive in the Bacalar Lagoon, also known as Lagoon of the Seven Colors, which has a large expanse of shallow waters and slight waves. Within the body of water there are several pools where safe immersions can be carried out due to its low depth that does not exceed 6 m (20 ft).
At the entrance to Bacalar, and connected by a mouth to the lagoon, is the Cenote Azul, a magical place surrounded by exuberant jungle vegetation. It is a unique place to dive. It offers the challenge of root and trunk labyrinths, as well as rock formations; It also has caverns that are only recommended to be penetrated by experienced divers with guides. It has good visibility so it is easy to enjoy this magical world with a background that has not been fully explored at a depth of 90 m (295 ft).

In the region you can also dive in underground channels and caverns that flow into lagoons and the Caribbean Sea, it is a unique experience but it is only for experienced divers.
